What is Menopause?

Menopause marks the end of menstruation, occurring when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. This natural stage typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55.

3 Stages of Menopause

Menopause unfolds in three stages: perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Each stage comes with its own unique timeline and set of symptoms, as individual as you are.

What Happens in Perimenopause?

Perimenopause begins when estrogen and progesterone levels start fluctuating. You may notice irregular menstrual cycles, cycles without ovulation, and symptoms like hot flashes, sleep disturbances, or vaginal dryness. Fortunately, there are treatments to help ease these changes.

Common Symptoms of Perimenopause:

  • Irregular periods

  • Hot flashes and sleep issues

  • Mood changes

  • Vaginal and bladder changes

  • Decreased fertility

  • Changes in sexual function

  • Bone density loss

  • Shifts in cholesterol levels

When Does It Start?

Perimenopause can begin in some women as early as their 30s, but most experience it between 40 and 44.

When Does It End?

This phase varies widely—lasting anywhere from 4 to 10+ years.

When to Call a Doctor?

Some women find they can manage perimenopausal symptoms on their own, while others may benefit from medical support. If symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, or sexual health changes are impacting your daily life or well-being, it’s a good idea to consult with a specialist.
